March Madness has been a staple of American sports culture for over half a century, giving basketball fans some of the most entertaining competition for several weeks. The ultimate goal…filling out the perfect bracket, which has never been done in the history of March Madness. When considering the numbers, the odds of filling out a flawless bracket is 1 in 9.2 quintillions (that’s 18 zeros, to be exact). Watch parties have also been a big part of the action, whether it’s at the local bar or the comfort of their own home. At these watch parties, viewers have the privilege of sporting their favorite teams’ colors as they cheer them on to the National Championship.
The term ‘March Madness’ was first mentioned in 1939 by Henry V. Porter, an Illinois High School Official. That year, only 8 teams competed in the tournament, which grew to 16 in 1951, then steadily increased throughout the next 60 years. By 2011, the NCAA Tournament had reached 68 teams, which has remained the magic number to this day. The competition is kicked off with Selection Sunday, where the committee selects teams who will receive a bid in the tournament, followed by their designated seed in the bracket.
Even with the pandemic taking a toll on American sports, the NCAA has decided they will still hold the NCAA tournament in Mid-March.
